We began production for A Christmas Carol in the spring of 2004. Adapting the Charles Dickens story to a shooting script, casting the characters and preparing sets, costumes and props.  It was quite an undertaking with over 40 people cast in the show.  But somehow we managed it.

"Bah! Humbug!"

Finding locations was a challenging job. Needing scenes that represented London in the 19th century during the winter season wasn't an easy task being that we were located in Georgia... and shooting was planned to begin in the middle of the summer.  Using some of the old streets and buildings still around from the late 1800's proved useful, however modern additions such as air conditioners and electrical wires had to be framed out of the shot.  It turned out to be somewhat of a constraint on our options.

We ended up having to build our own street for some scenes which gave our movie more of a theatrical look.

We used a lot of cotton and fake snow for our exterior shots.  Though we tried to schedule our exterior scenes to be shot later into the autumn season when it was cooler, there were times  we had to shoot during the hot month of August and September.

John Gilbert played  Scrooge.  He did a great job with the part.  This was a role he was very familiar with having played the character in several other stage and radio productions in the past.

And he's not one bit happy about it either

For Scrooge's bedroom scenes, we shot in a home located in Lovejoy, Georgia that was built in the 1800's.  A beautiful home owned by Robert & Regena Whitaker. They allowed us to haul in our lights, cameras and props and take over for a few days. It was perfect for what we needed.

The Ghost of Christmas Past makes an entrance

LouAnne Cooper played the part of the Ghost of Christmas Past.  Though in the movie she interacted with Scrooge, she never once saw or heard him during production.  All of her scenes were shot in front of a blue screen in the studio and she was fed his lines by someone off camera.

We used two actors to portray young Scrooge.  One for the very young child Ebenezer, and another for the young adult.

A renaissance dance troupe volunteered to perform during the Fezziwig Party scene.  They were incredible and gave the scene its authenticity.  Shot in the Hazelhurst House in McDonough, (a pre-civil war home) our own extras and the dance troupe intermingled with each other.  This was where young Scrooge and Belle first meet each other.

"Ebenezer Scroooooge!"

Ross Iddings played the Ghost of Christmas Present with his usual greatness.  A veteran stage actor, Ross is able to project his voice to be heard in the next county.   Using that ability, he made the character larger than life which was exactly needed for the part.

Shocked to see Uncle Scrooge

Scrooge's office was shot in an old building in McDonough just off the square which is now the location of Season's Bistro, a fine dining restaurant. At the time of production, the building was being renovated and completely empty.  It was constructed in the early 1800's and used as a funeral parlor as well as many other things.  Interesting note: this same building has been reported to be haunted and investigated by the Atlanta Ghost Hunters. Check out our ghost hunting series on the SCB-TV page.
